Code of Ethics

Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
of the National Association of REALTORS®

NAR’s Code of Ethics, adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients’ best interests.

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics requirements is a REALTOR®’S only requirement. It focuses on training members on the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, while the NJ continuing education requirement focuses on general real estate ethics. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics requirement is necessary to maintain membership with the Association, while the New Jersey continuing education requirement is necessary to maintain a real estate license.

Triennial Ethics  Requirements

Cycle 7: January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2024

The National Association of REALTORS® requires that all members complete 2.5 hours of ethics training that cover specific topics during each three-year cycle – the current cycle 7 ends December 31, 2024.

NAR requires local associations like MJAR to suspend any members that haven’t completed the requirement by the deadline of December 31, and terminate the membership if not completed after the deadline.

What do you need to do?

  • If you’ve completed the traning, email the certificate of completion to Joanne@MidJerseyAOR.com before December 31, 2024.
  • If you need to take the training, NAR provides online Code of Ethics courses, including a free course—find them here. To view a list of courses that MJAR accepts and fulfills the NAR requirement, click here.

What if you miss the deadline?

On January 1, 2025, MJAR would be required to suspend your membership. Suspension means:

  • Suspended members are still obligated to abide by the Code of Ethics and pay their REALTOR® dues, if they wish to continue holding REALTOR® membership with MJAR.
  • Suspended members are unable to access or complete the 2024 NJ REALTORS® Circle of Excellence Sales Award® application.
  • Important services like Supra, REALTORS® Property Resource® (RPR), access to some MLSs, and more may be impacted or turned off completely.
  • Learn more about suspended memberships here.
  • Members suspended on January 1 would have until February 28, 2025, to meet the NAR Code of Ethics training requirement or face termination of MJAR membership.

On March 1, 2025, any suspended member who hasn’t fulfilled the NAR Code of Ethics training requirement for Cycle 7 would have their membership terminated.

  • To reinstate their REALTOR® membership, agents would need to show proof of completing the Code of Ethics training.

If you have questions, email MJAR Membership Manager Peggy Whiteside at Peggy@MidJerseyAOR.com.

After you complete the Code of Ethics training, you can check your status to ensure your record has been updated.
